Of course, the latest rush to reshore was generated by the increased tariffs.  But there is another common theme. None of the customers really wanted to be using offshore sources in the first place.  Here are some of the concerns we have heard:

• Their IP being unprotected.  One of our customers was actually told at a trade show by the offshore company that copied (stole) his patented design he was being greedy wanting to keep this all to himself.  Another customer discovered their own tooling was used to produce parts for others.

• Their very long shipping delays were costing them sales, and they had little ability to offer multiple finishes or options because of the lead-times.

• Their true cost of goods was much higher that they initially planned, even with the base level of tariffs, fees, container costs, and paying upfront and when on water. Even if adding these up is still less than US production, most consider it a good trade-off due to the other detractions.

• We have not even mentioned quality concerns, good luck resolving those on parts already 100% paid for.

There are still some manufactures that can’t keep drinking the Kool Aide.  A year after the scare of people losing their eyesight to contaminated imported eye drops, consumers still have little options for a US made choice.  These poor management decisions are finally being seen for what they are.  Plastic Resources believes we are beginning a manufacturing renaissance in this country.  We are here to help you be part of it – let’s talk!
